Liguria is a thin, crescent-shaped coastal region with a Mediterranean climate, poor, stony soils and hills with precipices that almost fall directly into the sea. These steep hills make wine growing a real challenge.
In Liguria, most wine is made by small artisanal producers who are obliged to cultivate their vines on terraces carved into the rocky slopes. However, in some cases the steep slopes are a blessing, as they protect the grapes close to the sea from the colder winter winds coming down from the Alps.
