Although Umbria’s most renowned wines are made from white grapes, such as Trebbiano and Grechetto, other great ones are made from red grapes, such as the indigenous Sagrantino and Sangiovese.
The vines in Umbria experience cold, rainy winters and dry summers with plenty of sunshine, which is useful for optimal ripening of the grapes. The exception to this is the area west of Perugia. Here, in fact, temperatures are moderated by the waters of Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake on the Italian peninsula.
