Champagne
Champagne takes its name from the region where it is grown, fermented and bottled. The Champagne region is located in the northeastern corner of France, near Paris. According to European legislation, only vineyards within a 100 mile radius of the region are legally entitled to use the ‘Champagne’ appellation. Outside the Champagne region, French sparkling wine is known as Crémant.
Champagne production dates back to the 1700s and today the vineyards cover 84,000 acres, including hills and plains, in the five main growing regions of Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne and Aube.
