Massavecchia Specialities: Red wine

The Massa Vecchia farm is located in the upper Maremma region of Tuscany, in the heart of the Colline Metallifere (Metalliferous Hills). Founded in 1985 by Fabrizio Niccolaini, it is a small estate of approximately 24 hectares divided into three main areas:

  • The first area (230 m a.s.l.): Situated at the foot of the hill where the town of Massa Marittima stands, it includes the winery, vineyards (3.9 ha), olive groves (1.5 ha), and arable land (0.8 ha).

  • The second area (approx. 200 m a.s.l.): Also located on the slopes of the hill but on the opposite side, featuring 0.8 hectares of vineyards.

  • The third area (nearly 500 m a.s.l.): Located further inland toward the mountainous part of the region, it consists of the farmhouse, a vineyard (1.2 ha), arable land (4.5 ha), and woodland (11 ha).

Production Philosophy

Natural wines are defined as wines produced without the aid of chemicals—both in the vineyard and the cellar—and without the use of invasive technologies.

The core of this choice lies in the desire to produce wines that are true to their terroir. The moment a wine is manipulated or "constructed," this essential element is lost; it ceases to be wine and instead becomes a "beverage."

In the Vineyard: Avoiding chemicals means allowing the vines to grow and develop in harmony with their specific soil and climate (pedoclimatic context). This enables the vineyard to authentically express the character of the land.

In the Cellar: Rejecting chemicals and invasive technology means supporting and harmoniously managing the biochemical transformations involved in the journey from grape to wine.

A vital consequence of this approach is the promotion of well-being—both for the human body and for our Earth.
