La Coulée de Serrant Specialities: White wine

"To deeply understand life, we must leave matter behind and focus on understanding the system that gives life to the Earth." These few words are enough to understand the richness that resides in the winemaking philosophy of Nicolas Joly, owner of the Domaine. Coulée de Serrant takes its name from a vineyard planted by Cistercian monks around the year 1130 and has remained a vineyard ever since.

The vineyards are located in the western part of the Loire, where La Coulée de Serrant became an appellation in its own right; today there are 7 hectares owned by the Joly family, which are cultivated partly by hand and on horseback because of the steep slopes above the Loire. A master and pioneer of biodynamics, Nicolas, has been applying principles of that philosophy since 1984, which aim to catalyze "vital energies" in winemaking.

Only Chenin in the Vineyards

Everything is harvested by hand in 4 or 5 passes, cutting only the clusters at perfect ripeness. The resulting wines are golden yellow, with aromas of candied fruit, apricot and honey expressing great minerality and creaminess. All labels are made from 100% pure Chenin, standing out on three lines: the Coulée de Serrant- ranked as one of the best French whites- the Vieux Clos and the Clos de la Bergerie. Nicolas's sensitivity and immense respect for all-round, sustainable viticulture led him to create appellations and have followers throughout Europe; in fact, in 2001, with five other producers, they founded the "Renaissance des Appellations" association.
