Herrenhof Lamprecht
Pöllau, Markt Hartmannsdorf
Herrenhof Lamprecht is located deep in "Vulkanland," an area near the border with Slovenia in southeastern Austria.
The winery formally began in 2006 when the Lamprecht family took over the old Vorau Abbey farm and adjacent land where wine had been made until the mid-1800s.
Gottfried Lamprecht is the young winemaker who takes the project forward; his motto is simple: "artisanal wine, without compromise". After graduating from the University of Vienna with a degree in horticulture, he returned to the winery and immediately began replanting vines, about one hectare per year until today's 9 hectares, many of which are used to make wines in the "Gemischter Satz" style, that is, with many different varieties in winemaking.
Appellation "Buchertberg" Contrôlée
Gottfried believes very much in his land; the soul of the wine comes directly from the vineyard. That is why there is so much focus at Herrenhof on developing biodiversity and healthy soil, which is the basic prerequisite for the plants. The terroir is so special because of the geology, the soil in the vineyards is characterized by tertiary sediments, "brown opok" a sedimentary rock similar to marl and limestone sandstone.
To bring out the qualities of the soil in the wines, Gottfried decided to revive these ancient hillsides with a colorful "Gemischter Satz"-style blend. Basically, his vineyards are planted with more than 100 mixed local varieties (!) where the major contributions are made by Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) and Furmint.
He calls the hill that holds the wonderful mixture of vines "Buchertberg" and has gone so far as to consider it a true appellation: ABC, or Appellation Buchertberg Contrôlée. Although it is not officially recognized, Gottfried has registered the trademark.
Consistently in the winery he operates according to a self-imposed "charta" that basically guarantees: place of origin, organic farming, promotion of biodiversity, limited yields, spontaneous fermentations, no additives, long aging on lees and no clarification/filtering.
