Klinec Specialities: Orange wine

In the heart of the Slovenian Collio (Brda), Medana is in a privileged position for grape growing: almost 3000 hours of sunshine a year, less than 30 km from the sea, and the Julian Alps just to the north. It is here that the Klinec family has been growing grapes and offering traditional wines since 1918.

The soil of Medana and Goriška Brda in general consists mainly of "Flysch", Eocene rocks rich in marine fossils and layers of marl and sandstone. Exposed to the sun and weathering, the compact flysch quickly decomposes into fertile, mineral-rich and well-drained soil, while the subsoil retains the original dense stratification and ensures valuable water reserves due to its low permeability.

The Vineyard

The estate consists of 6 plots, all hilly, between 150 and 180 metres above sea level, for a total of 6 hectares. In the field, biodynamic management is adopted, with farming methods for the reduced production of approximately one kilo of grapes per plant.

Grassing is practised in the inter-row, which is important because it contributes to the natural symbiotic balance between the vine and other plant species, i.e. to the specific ecosystem of each vineyard.

"The responsibility of us farmers towards the planet is particularly great. It is up to us to ensure that cultivation practices do not cause soil pollution or even, in the most serious cases, their desertification; it is equally up to us to help keep them alive and healthy, that is, to make a gift of them to our children who will live with them - and of them -."
