The Il Pratello farm is located in Romagna, more precisely in the Ibola valley in Modigliana at Fornaci. An impervious and wild place that Emilio Placci inherited from his father in 1991. Emilio's intuition turned into a challenge: to plant Sangiovese on those Appennine ridges that divide Romagna from upper Tuscany.
Emilio had sensed what potential that Sangiovese made in the mountains, far from the soft notes of the plains, which little represented the soul of the vine. So he began planting, from 1993 until 1998, a total of 5.5 ha of vines with very low yields, cultivated with organic principles with great respect for the surrounding environment.
Emilio continues to do research in the belief that the Modigliana area still has much to express, in fact on the other side of the valley he recently planted new plots from mass selections of the "old vines."
Modigliana, where Sangiovese speaks another language
Modigliana represents a unique terroir for Sangiovese, a geographical area characterized by 3 fundamental elements:
To begin with, the particular geological matrix with an abundance of sandstone and sedimentary marls of marine origin, thus shallow soils with a lot of skeleton and little clay. This conformation influences the characteristics of the wines: particularly savory, endowed with evident minerality and spiciness.
The second element is the altitude and the important presence of the forest, which, apart from a few sporadic vines and small towns, covers the entire Ibola Valley by extension. This creates a cooler microclimate where temperature ranges are very strong between day and night in the growing season. This aspect stimulates the plant to create more aromas at the peel level and in general a more pronounced acidity content.
The third element is partly a consequence of the previous two, namely the incredible longevity that the terroir guarantees the wines. Emilio is a great interpreter of the terroir and offers wines of great depth of flavor and finesse.
