Before being a Chateau or a farm, Le Puy is a thousand-year-old place whose history tells of a profound relationship between man and nature. We are located on the top of a rocky plateau, the same as Saint Emilion and Pomerol, on clay-limestone soils rich in marine fossils so typical in this area of Bordeaux.
The ancestors of the Amoreau family, have been working these lands since the 1600s, and even then they had noticed the uniqueness of this place, capable of yielding wines of extraordinary finesse, so much so that they gave it the name "Coteau des Merveilles," or the plateau of wonders.
Today there are 54 hectares under vine on the property, with vineyards with an average age of 50 years, to which are added forests, prairies and ponds that create a very useful biodiversity for the creation of a natural balance based on the exchange between different plant and animal species.
Innovation and preservation of tradition
At Le Puy, each generation of vignerons has brought improvements to the production process, according to a spirit of innovation while respecting the tradition that has always distinguished the Amoreau family's way of making wine.
From the 1970s onward, the main goal has been to create a fully diversified agroforestry ecosystem. Forests, ponds , orchards, and meadows have been integrated with the cultivation of vines, in a process that has also involved fauna: in addition to cows, which have always been present, bee hives and horses have been introduced for working between the rows, as well as the cultivation of plants and flowers to increase the presence of insects on the farm.
Starting in the 1990s, the first cuvees were made without the addition of sulfites at any stage of winemaking, and biodynamic practices were introduced in the agricultural management of the vineyard, which had already been certified organic since 1964!
