Domaine de La Tour du Bon is located in the lieu dit Le Brulat in the commune of Le Castellet, in the Aoc Bandol territory of Provence, exactly between Marseille and Toulon in southeastern France. The subsoil is predominantly limestone with poor, shallow overlying soils consisting of red clays.
The grape variety of reference, as in the Aoc, is mourvèdre. The wind, the sea with its mitigating influence and the omnipresent sunlight shape the wines of this area, making them perfume-laden and ripe. Agnes Henry, Parisian by birth and accustomed to spending the summer vacations of her youth there, has led the Domaine since 1990. With no knowledge of winemaking, she immediately entrusted herself to a talented young man, a "certain" Thierry Puzelat, who remained there until 1994 followed by Antoine Pouponneau, who then left in 2006 for Corsica in Clos Canarelli. Both from the Loire Valley and with an innovative approach, closer to nature and non-interventionist winemaking.
Encountering wines in amphora.
In the cellar, interventions are kept to a minimum, to accompany the wines to their natural expression, and there are stainless steel vats, used for whites and rosés, which represent the highest volume produced by the Aoc Bandol with about 75% of the total hectoliters, and large wood barrels where Mourvèdre-based reds are vinified and aged instead, traditionally with only partial destemming.
In 2012 Agnes met Elisabetta Foradori at the natural wine show Le Vin de mes Amis and learned about amphora winemaking through her, falling instantly in love with it. Thus, since 2013, amphorae have also entered the Domaine, from which En Sol, a Mourvèdre from long maceration on the skins in above-ground terracotta amphorae built by Juan Padilla of Villarobledo, comes to life.
