Vinas Mora was born in 2020 when Croatian sommelier Kreso Petrekovic realized that the tourist market was erasing the viticulture of the area where he grew up. Kreso, a wine importer for the U.S. market, then decided to get involved in promoting and protecting the unique terroir of the Primošten Hills. Together with his friend Niko Dukan, who has always been active in the world of wine promotion, the two founded Vinas Mora, a play on words meaning “Wines from the Sea” due to the proximity of the vineyards to the coast.
This is an ambivalent territory that, before the explosion of tourism, subsisted on fishing and farming that was difficult to carry on on this arid and rocky land. “Before the 1960s, there was vineyard everywhere here and a few houses scattered among the rocks. The vineyards were abandoned and those who did not move to the big cities came to the coast. It is the inland villages, where most of our grapes come from, that are the real representation of the country.” Niko Dukan
Vineyards as mosaics of many small “Clos”
The vineyards of Primosten, appear from the first glance as an incredible work. They are a testimony to an agriculture made of hard work and sacrifice. The land is entirely covered with large stones that are piled up to build very small, rectangular-shaped clos that house one, two or maximum three creeping plants, which often bear no more than one or two clusters, according to Niko. The clos serve the function of protecting the plants from the driving wind, which becomes a constant presence in the hinterland, while at the same time being able to contribute an earthy substrate that allows the vine to take root, before its roots can tackle the rocky depths in search of water nutrition.
In this unique terroir, wines of great minerality are created, only seemingly slender and subtle, but capable of revealing an unexpected depth where finesse and elegance coexist.
