Sergio Arcuri

Cirò Marina, Crotone
The Arcuri family business was born in Cirò in 1880 thanks to Peppe Arcuri, founder of the company. They produced grapes until 1973 when Sergio's father, opened his own winery for production and sales. In 2009 Sergio and Francesco his brother began bottling their own wine.
The 4 cultivated acres are located in the heart of the Ciró area on the southeastern edge of Calabria overlooking the Gulf of Taranto and Puglia. One of Sergio's greatest fortunes is having inherited old vines planted in 1948 with the traditional bush-training system, as well as a more “recent” spurred cordon vineyard planted in the 1980s. He works in an environmentally friendly manner, with modest yields of about 40 hl/ha with minimal use of copper and sulfur, with little light tilling of the soil done during the vine's winter rest period.
The kingdom of Gaglioppo
The winery's flagship grape is Gaglioppo, the region's best-known red grape variety, grown on about four hectares of estate vineyards worked according to the dictates of organic farming with a spurred cordon and sapling system. The arid, breezy and warm climate allows for brisk ripening of the grapes. The soil, composed of the famous red soils, has been free of synthetic chemicals for nearly a century. As in the vineyard, the credo is the same in the winery: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts and no use of exogenous substances. Vinification and aging are carried out inside palmenti (open concrete tanks).
