Tenuta il Gheppio is a very young project born in 2022 in the Pistoia hills in central Tuscany, thanks to the vision of Juliette de Cartier and her family, who fell in love with the beauty of this hidden corner of Tuscany and decided to buy an old farm in the Serravalle Pistoiese area, a historical area where vines and olives have been grown since time immemorial.
From the beginning, the agricultural and cellar part was entrusted to the young oenologist Stefano Cappa, who, after a significant experience in a well-known biodynamic Tuscan company, married Juliette's project, enraptured by the beauty of the place and the possibility of working with old plants in an uncontaminated context, where the vineyard is totally surrounded by forest and olive groves.
Biodynamics and the recovery of old vineyards
"When I came out of my academic career I was lucky enough to work my way up through the ranks in companies that worked in biodynamics and I literally fell in love with this world. This path gave me the sensitivity I needed to take on a project where I had to start from scratch! The vineyard had to be recovered, so the priority in these cases is to restore the well-being of the plant. A process that cannot be done in a short time, because you have to intervene as little as possible, in small steps year after year" Stefano Cappa.
The pearl of the winery is an old Pinot Noir vineyard, "whoever planted it had foresight, because we are in front of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, which brings a cool climate, very windy, with a wide temperature range. These are all perfect characteristics for Pinot Noir, which can mature here more slowly, developing the aromatic part to the maximum".
