Jardin Oculto was founded by Maria José Granier in 2019, but its history begins long before that.
In the early 1900s, her great-grandfather Julio Ortiz Linares and her grandfather Luis Granier pioneered winemaking in the Cinti Valley at the helm of the historic San Pedro winery. In 1982 Luis Granier moved to Tarija and founded the winery that has now become Jardin Oculto. The heart of the estate are small vineyards with very old plants, many over 200 years old, marinated in trees and surviving phylloxera and other diseases thanks to the care passed down orally from generation to generation by the old local farmers who still own them and work in total synergy with Maria José and her staff.

San Roque, Lumen, Molle Pampa and Los Membrillos are the names of the vineyards: we are at an altitude of 2,300 metres on either side of the Rio Grande, where dry air, sunshine, the absence of disease and recurring flooding of the river play an essential role in the cultivation of vines and the production of healthy, balanced grapes.
The plants grow on trees, reaching up to 4 metres in height, without a predetermined form of husbandry. Sheep and chickens work the undergrowth in a setting more like a garden than a vineyard. These hidden (almost secret) places still existing in the mountains marked the memory of Maria José, who chose this name for her project. The grapes are transported at night to Tarija (1900 m altitude), which is a 4-5 hour drive away, crossing a mountain of over 3000 m and arriving naturally cool (4-5°C). Steel in vinification and ageing, spontaneous fermentation, use of a part of the whole bunch and only a small addition of sulphur after the end of fermentation are the few rules followed in the winery.
