Domaine Sélèque: A Family Story of Innovation and Tradition
The history of the Sélèque family in the world of Champagne began with Henri Sélèque, a Polish immigrant to France who, in the 1960s, planted his first vineyards in Moussy and Pierry. With the help of his father-in-law, Henri produced his first bottles in 1969, laying the foundation for the family business.
The real turning point came in 1974 with Richard, Henri's son, who brought a wave of modernity. After studying oenology, Richard focused on improving the winemaking and aging practices, investing in new equipment to independently manage every phase of production, from pressing to bottling. Together with his father, he also expanded the vineyards, acquiring plots in prestigious areas like Dizy, Mardeuil, and Vertus, in addition to the ones they already owned. His technical rigor remains a cornerstone of the Domaine's philosophy to this day.
In 2008, it was the turn of Jean-Marc, Richard's son. After studying and working in "New World" wineries, such as in Napa Valley and the Yarra Valley, he returned home with a wealth of technical knowledge and a meticulous focus on precision. However, his experiences abroad had also shown him the limitations of a purely technological approach, which often sacrifices the authenticity of the wine in the name of standardization.
A New Approach
A new awareness drove Jean-Marc to shift the Domaine toward a more artisanal vision for their Champagne, with the goal of expressing the terroir as best as possible. For him, technology must serve nature, not the other way around. This is why, in 2015, he moved to a brand-new, cutting-edge winery designed to work by gravity, thus protecting the integrity of the grapes.
The winery is equipped with the latest generation of tools, such as a Coquard press that ensures exceptional precision. The large underground space has allowed Jean-Marc to experiment with different materials and aging formats, using steel vats, barrels, and even amphorae.
Today, Jean-Marc Sélèque is part of a new wave of producers who are revolutionizing Champagne, rediscovering the concept of terroir, rejecting high yields, and reasserting the central role of the artisan winemaker over large international brands. His approach points to a new path, one of authenticity and respect for the wine and its land.
