Bakkanali: A Monographic Look

This text introduces Bakkanali, a beautiful project located in a lesser-known part of Tuscany.

Bakkanali is a joint venture between Sebastian Nasello (formerly the enologist at Podere Le Ripi) and Ugo Fabbri (a highly inspired figure in artisan wine). The certified organic winery, which is also in conversion to biodynamic certification, boasts 5.5 hectares of vineyards. The Sangiovese vineyards surrounding the winery are characterized by soils with a high iron content, aptly giving the location the name "Poggioferro" (Iron Hill).

As you ascend in elevation, the underlying rock in the vineyards reveals its most interesting characteristics, particularly in the Chardonnay vineyard at 800 meters. Here, the limestone imparts tension to the wines, while volcanic sands contribute their spicy minerality. As always, higher altitudes further refine the overall profile of the wines.

Bakkanali: A Terroir-Driven Approach on Mount Amiata

Bakkanali is the brainchild of Sebastian Nasello, former enologist at Podere Le Ripi, and Ugo Fabbri, a highly innovative figure in artisan wine. This certified organic winery, currently transitioning to biodynamic certification, cultivates a total of 5.5 hectares of vineyards.

Diverse Terroirs and Elevations

The estate's vineyards boast a remarkable geological complexity, reflected in their diverse soil compositions:

  • Poggioferro (Lower Elevation Sangiovese): Around the winery, the Sangiovese vineyards are named "Poggioferro" due to their high iron content in the soil.
  • Higher Elevation Vineyards: As the elevation increases, the underlying rock reveals its most interesting characteristics.
    • Limestone: Imparts tension to the wines.
    • Volcanic Sands: Contribute a spicy minerality.
    • Higher Altitudes: Refine the overall wine profile, exemplified by the Chardonnay vineyard at 800 meters.

Mount Amiata's Unique Geology

The vineyards are located on Mount Amiata, the largest and highest (1,738 meters) of a series of Pleistocene lava domes situated between Siena and Grosseto. Despite its volcanic origin, the soils have a significant marine matrix with large quantities of ancient calcareous sediments. These, combined with the volcanic sands and Fly
