Beck Hartweg

Florian's method

The Beck-Hartweg estate consists of 8 ha of vineyards including Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir with a predominantly eastern exposure. The soil is granitic, very sandy and light, poor and close to the parent rock.

In the vineyard Florian works as little as possible, in the growing season he crushes the grass in the inter-row with a roller so as to create a natural mulch that preserves life in the soil, never tops but intertwines the shoots, and the soil is tilled at the base of the plants to aerate just enough. Grassing allows him to harvest different botanicals from which he makes herbal teas for the vine: yarrow, nettle, dandelion, etc. And only as a last resort does he use a little Bordeaux mixture or sulfur. 

In the wonderful cellar built in 1784 there are barrels, which Florian still uses for their perfect micro-oxygenation, one and sometimes 2 centuries old! Here, too, the philosophy is purely non-interventionist, where the winemaker performs a control function, to ensure that no external agents arrive that could compromise the true expression of the vintage. A job made of cleanliness and precision that allows him to bottle without the use of sulfites.
