Filipa Pato Specialities: Sparkling wine

Filipa Pato is a producer originally from the Barraida region, an area that is located a few kilometers away from the Atlantic Ocean, which positively influences its climate, making it particularly suited to quality viticulture.

Filipa is a child of art; her father Luis is considered one of the key figures in Portuguese viticulture, the one who first believed all the way in the excellence of Barraida's productions, investing everything in quality and local grape varieties. Following in his father's footsteps, Filipa opened his own winery in 2001 and from the beginning his philosophy has been to work only with native grapes (Baga, Bical, Maria Gomes, Sercial..)in search of Barraida's most vocated vineyards.

In 2010 Filipa's husband William, a well-known Belgian sommelier and restaurateur, also joined the project.

Filipa's wines have an Atlantic finesse rare to be found in the area, you will find tradition and a fresh and current vision, gastronomic but without commitment, in one of the most vocated territories of Portugal.

Experimentation as a production philosophy

The first goal was to acquire old Baga vines, 100-year-old vines that were planted with free-range vines, a key genetic material for making replantings in mass selection. At the same time in the area where the winery would later rise, in Ois do Bairro, Filipa and William experimented with a biodynamic farming approach on a vineyard 30 years younger than Bical.

They were the first to bring biodynamic viticulture to the area, but the experimentation does not end in the field; in fact, new vinifications are tried in the winery as well, in order to be able to best express both the grape and the terroir. For example, a white and a red are produced vinified in terracotta amphorae, at the same time on the most suitable plots they are producing their territorial wine par excellence, the crowning achievement of their project together: Nossa.

Nossa comes from the best old vines, with the best exposures. Nossa racconta Filipa is an expression used in Brazil to say when one is speechless, completely overwhelmed by beauty, but Nossa also means "ours," it was the perfect name for these branco and tinto wines from the Bairrada designed together.
