Montesecondo

San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Firenze
Silvio Messana is a difficult character to describe in a few lines. In his life a thousand travels and experiences have led him to develop a deep sensitivity to music as an art form and viticulture. He was born in Florence but immediately the family moved to North Africa where he remained until the age of 18.
Upon returning to Italy, the family began to take care of a piece of land planted with vines in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, on the outskirts of the Chianti Classico region, and he began to develop a passion for music: here began another important chapter in his life that saw him move to Boston to Berkley University to study music with a special predilection for the saxophone.
His subsequent move to New York marks his first definitive contact with wine. In fact, he works as a composer of soundtracks but also as a wine salesman for top import agencies of artisanal wines.
In 1999, Montesecondo was born.
The New York experience was fundamental to the final choice to move to the family's land in Tuscany and become a winemaker. As with every choice in his life, Silvio approached this new adventure with much dedication and deep sensitivity, thinking about the project in a new way. The following is an excerpt of his thoughts:
"The first question a winemaker asks is, "What wine will this land give me?" With the first vinifications begins a journey of discovery and learning. Learning how to nurture the vine, create the most balanced habitat to allow it to express itself at its best, the vine will do the rest. This is our work.
To work for the land and not the land, to think of the farm as a living organism containing life forces and not just as a production system. This is a vision that changes people and changes wines. Through the hands of a human being, it expresses a territory but without them it cannot exist. When the hand changes, it will change the wine, it will be another expression of the same territory.
In this infinite complexity, mutability, ability to surprise lies its mystery, its beauty." Silvio Messana
