Matteo Niccolai Vignaiolo Specialities: Red wine

Matteo Niccolai, Vignaiolo ‘Ostinato’.

Matteo's story begins and now continues in Bolgheri, one of Tuscany's most important wine areas. It is a return to the land and to the roots: the Niccolai family has lived here for many generations. In between, Matteo was a restaurateur and creator of the ‘I Mattaioni’ project together with his friend Stefan.

At a certain point, returning home with a personal project was too strong a call. So it is not a story of speculation or exploitation of the fame that the territory has built up over the years, but rather a contrary thrust: in an area dominated by the presence of large wine entrepreneurs, many times ‘outsiders’ and not historically linked to the territory, it is interesting and beautiful the story of a guy who without many means tries obstinately!

Stubborn is the approach, the need to work in a different way: only small plots of old vines to be recovered (the oldest is dated at the land registry in 1964, the youngest in 1998!), little organic work in the field and spontaneous vinification in the cellar. For wines that offer a completely new and unconventional vision of Bolgheri.

A new key to interpretation

A clear idea: to express the territory's potential in a new way. An expression that is not necessarily muscular, where one seeks ca concentration and extraction at all costs, but rather to allow the perfumes and subtleties that the presence of the sea and the old vineyard can give. Through fast wines that do not need long ageing to be ready, far from it!

A new way of interpreting Bolgheri through Matteo's stubborn dream.

"Quite simply, the moment I decided to devote myself almost completely to agriculture, leaving behind my career as a restaurateur, it came to me spontaneously to take refuge in the places where I spent part of my life and where I fell in love with wine.

I was lucky: through extensive research I managed to rent five plots of land, some of them very old.

I was able to observe and spend time with the people who looked after them and finally arrive, in 2024, at the first bottling. So, the wines are all produced from the vineyards that I now jealously guard." Matteo.

The project is constantly evolving and in 2025 the first wines in the range, the "Esco Presto", are released.
