Producer: Matteo Niccolai Vignaiolo
Esco Presto Bianco 2024 Toscana IGT
Bolgheri, Livorno, Toscana
Blend of 60% Trebbiano, 30% Vermentino and 10% Sauvignon.
The label and the name of the wine are in contrast to the classic Bolgheri canons. Even the name ‘Esco Presto’ is intended to emphasise how this wine is designed to have freshness and ready drinking, without seeking over-extraction or particular concentrations.
The taste is very interesting, the mouth is fine where the freshness of the Trebbiano is supported by a white pulp fruit to which notes of lemon peel and morello cherry are added. A summery and slightly aromatic wine, with the slightly bitter finish typical of Vermentino.
Matteo Niccolai Vignaiolo
Matteo Niccolai, Vignaiolo ‘Ostinato’.
Matteo's story begins and now continues in Bolgheri, one of Tuscany's most important wine areas. It is a return to the land and to the roots: the Niccolai family has lived here for many generations. In between, Matteo was a restaurateur and creator of the ‘I Mattaioni’ project together with his friend Stefan.
At a certain point, returning home with a personal project was too strong a call. So it is not a story of speculation or exploitation of the fame that the territory has built up over the years, but rather a contrary thrust: in an area dominated by the presence of large wine entrepreneurs, many times ‘outsiders’ and not historically linked to the territory, it is interesting and beautiful the story of a guy who without many means tries obstinately!
Stubborn is the approach, the need to work in a different way: only small plots of old vines to be recovered (the oldest is dated at the land registry in 1964, the youngest in 1998!), little organic work in the field and spontaneous vinification in the cellar. For wines that offer a completely new and unconventional vision of Bolgheri.
