Ilenia Spagnoli

Arcola, La Spezia
Ilenia Spagnoli is a fourth-generation winemaker. Already her great-grandfather and grandfather cultivated and vinified grapes, selling the product in bulk. It was her father Andrea who definitively transformed the farm in Arcola in the province of La Spezia, starting to bottle Vermentino within the Colli di Luni Vermentino DOC denomination.
After studying oenology and viticulture at the University of Pisa, Ilenia - born in 1987 - returned to the winery with the aim of rediscovering her grandfather's and great-grandfather's natural winemaking techniques, in search of a natural balance with the environment to transfer all the expressive power of the territory into the bottle.
Old vines on high ground
The Spagnoli winery, 3.5 hectares planted with vines on Monte Masignano, on the border between Arcola and Vezzano Ligure, produces about 15 thousand bottles a year. The vineyards - all around the winery - are for the most part over 50 years old. The area is characterised by clay and stony soil, and the soil is fed with green manure.
Three labels of whites tell the winemaker's idea of wine: the first wine is a white called PAN (a blend of Vermentino and Trebbiano); the second label, eXtreme, starts from the same blend to which it gives two weeks of maceration on the skins and zero added sulphur. The PAN label represents the hand of Ilenia's first child, born while she decided to make the wine. PAN is the first word she said. Finally, the third label, Vermentino DOC in purity, a very pleasant wine that tells a very sunny and incisive idea of Vermentino, a real pleasure to drink!
