Paolo e Lorenzo Marchionni a Vigliano Specialities: Red wine

We are in Tuscany, in the hills surrounding Florence, about 15 kilometers from the city in a southwesterly direction, in a hamlet of just a few houses called Vigliano. We are a stone's throw from the Church of San Martino alla Palma on one side and bordering the beautiful Bosco della Roveta on the other.

We are in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area, in soils extraordinarily suited to the cultivation of vines and olive trees. Stony, well exposed to the west-southwest, they have a decidedly alkaline nature and a very varied composition, with a strong presence of limestone, mixed with marl, sand and traces of loose clay. The average slope is considerable, about 17%, with even significantly higher peaks. In summer and autumn the day-night temperature range is noticeable, as is the presence of constant air currents.

Vineyard and agriculture

"Our vineyards have an average slope between 15 and 20 percent. The soils consist mainly of fine sand and silt with limestone clasts from Alberese and with rare traces of clay, especially in the lower areas. A marked section of skeleton is also present. They are also very draining both because of the composition of the soil and the slope itself. The vines have an average density of about 4700 vines per hectare and are cordon trained, with pruning that limits cutting on old wood thus promoting controlled branching of the spur upward. Yields per hectare average between 45 and 60 quintals of grapes. Grapes are harvested strictly by hand, in several passes, and the grapes are in the winery within a maximum of two hours of picking.

All cultivation is conducted using the method of certified organic farming, the first step toward conscious agriculture, respectful first of all of the earth and man. We observe and care for the vitality of the soil with respect to its balance with the plant, the fruit. We are passionate about an agricultural vision that is not limited only to the plant-fruit relationship, but also broadens its vision to other relationships in both the agricultural and social spheres."
