Le Verzure

Murlo, Siena
Le Verzure was born in the early 2000s thanks to Luigi and Antonella Villa, restaurateurs turned winemakers. With a family background in agriculture, they decided to embark on a journey that would take them back to their roots by purchasing Le Verzure. The winery is nestled among the rolling hills of Siena, a region shaped by viticulture developed by the Etruscans since 600 BC.
After buying the land, they transformed the large fields (once planted with alfalfa) into olive groves and beautiful Sangiovese vineyards, and a few years later, a new small vineyard with the area's white grapes-Malvasia and Trebbiano.
The vineyard and the winery
The vineyards cover 6 1/2 hectares, of these Vigna Alta and Vigna Bassa occupy 5 hectares and produce two different Sangiovese grosso crus: "RossoBruno" and "Il Bruno."
La Vignetta is a small plot of 1.5 hectares of Malvasia and Trebbiano. Thanks to its proximity to the Crevole and Ombrone rivers, its soil is clayey, rich in draining microskeleton and river pebbles, determining elements to the white wine's decisive and elegant character.
In the vineyard, the goal is to maintain soil fertility through non-invasive and respectful care: after the harvest we sow in alternate rows legumes, medicinal herbs and grasses in the vine's resting phase. These plants along with microfauna will go on to increase the life of the soil.
Every process in the countryside is done strictly by hand, following the dictates of biodynamic agriculture. The grapes are harvested by hand and brought to the winery in small crates, where a final selection is made before going into the destemmer and then into the vats for fermentation, which takes place solely with wild yeasts.
The vineyards are surrounded by cork oak forests mixed with Mediterranean scrub, creating a small world of biodiversity.
