Spirito Agricolo is the brainchild of Gianni Viberti, born in 1963, in 2015, officially coming to life in 2017 with the purchase of vineyards in the municipalities of Monforte d'Alba and Roddi and buildings in Borgata Cerequio; and then in 2018 with the production of the first wine from his own vineyards under organic farming.
Spirito Agricolo is an offshoot of Gianni's family's historic winery, which is "Cascina Ballarin" located on the valley floor road just before Barolo in the hamlet of Annunziata and founded by his grandparents in the late 1920s. This is still home to the winemaking and wine-aging cellar as well as the bulk of the vineyards that are part of the Bricco Rocca dell'Annunziata mention, characterized by Sant'Agata marls, fossil formations typical of this area. He is joined in this project by his young daughter Cecilia, just over 20 years old, who has just completed her studies at the Alba School of Enology.
Organic and Biodynamic Farming
The winery has been certified organic and Demeter since 2022 and 2023, respectively: in fact, Gianni followed the teachings of Stefano Bellotti of Cascina degli Ulivi in 2017; and then those of Nicolas Joly in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
The wines are the result of a path of agricultural knowledge and field experience: Gianni worked in the Ratti cellars in the 1980s-and as a style they seek the maximum expressive purity of the grapes. Precisely for this reason, no sulfites are used on either the whites or the reds (a true rarity for the area), and parts bordering other nearby vineyards are excluded where processing is diametrically opposed as required by the organic and biodynamic regimes.
The vinifications are all parcellaric; there is no temperature control and macerations, particularly on the nebbiolos, are very long and can extend until late winter and always with submerged cap, according to Langhe tradition.
