The charm of ancient Terroir
My father Emilio was born in 1943 in Lugagnano, Val d'Arda, and followed his family to this property, in the hills of Carpaneto Piacentino, when he was five years old. Of the six siblings, he is the one who has always stayed here, to continue with my mother the business that used to belong to my grandfather and grandmother.
We have always made wine, which we used to sell first in demijohns and then in bottles, but ours has never been a wine-growing business: until the 1990s my parents had a stable with dairy cows, and in the fields we grew cereals and fodder to feed the animals.
In 2006, when we renovated the premises that house the winery, a generational change also started and I joined my parents: since that year, for the first time, the label of our wines shows the small farming village that my family has been taking care of for almost eighty years. Under the vineyard, the sea
The vineyard still occupies just four hectares out of twenty. In addition to chestnut woods, forage and cereals, we have an orchard and a small olive grove.
Our village is Magnano, which is nine kilometres south of Carpaneto Piacentino, towards the Apennines. The soils on which we grow vines are rich in Pliocene sands and grey clays of the Lower Apennines and are characterised by the presence of fossils, especially molluscs and marine gastropods, which bear witness to climatic and environmental conditions that are very different from those of today: we are in the Stirone and Piacenziano Regional Park and here there was once the sea. It is this soil that gives us fresh, tannic and straight wines, even in the hottest years.
