Menti Specialities: White wine

The story of the Menti family unfolds across a century and a half of history, beginning in the late 19th century when the founder, Giovanni, settled in Gambellara, laying the foundations for a tradition deeply rooted in volcanic soils. A pivotal turning point came in 1964, the year Antonio was joined by a young Giovanni (known as Gianni), who would go on to define an era by completing an impressive 51 harvests through 2014.

Driven by Stefano’s innovative spirit, the new millennium brought a profound transformation: 2002 marked the beginning of a return to sustainable viticulture, a journey that culminated in 2010 with the practical introduction of biodynamic methods and in 2011 with the achievement of official organic certification. These milestones represent the perfect synthesis of past heritage and a vision of winemaking projected toward the future.

Gambellara, the Volcano, and the Garganega

Gambellara rises between Vicenza and Verona, at the southeastern edge of the Lessinia region, in a stunning landscape dotted with rolling hills. The terrain is characterized by the presence of basalts and tuffs—robust rocks formed by cooling lava back when the current Monte Crocetta was still an active volcano.

Consequently, these soils are rich in minerals, which impart their full energy to the local wines. The natural fertility of this land is further enhanced by the biodynamic methods employed, ensuring grapes of the highest quality.

The primary grape variety in Gambellara is the Garganega, a native cultivar with exceptional potential for withering (appassimento) and long aging. It is also extremely versatile, producing dry, mineral white wines. Its presence in the region has been documented since the Middle Ages.
