Just outside the city of Arezzo, yet already immersed in the rural landscape of the eastern foothills, the Matrignano winery—now led with great courage and determination by Bianca and Giacomo—has successfully evolved. It has transformed from a family heritage once anchored in traditional practices, such as selling grapes or bulk wine to large-scale bottlers, into a producer that is steadily making its mark on the vast Tuscan artisanal wine scene.

Founded in 1969 and boldly relaunched by the new generation in 2017, the winery has retired industrial protocols in favor of an uncompromising natural philosophy. Here, wine is not "manufactured"; it is accompanied. With six hectares of historic vineyards (some dating back to the 1960s) farmed organically, the family preserves a heritage of indigenous grape varieties—Sangiovese, Colorino, and Canaiolo—that thrive on southwest-facing slopes.

It is a return to roots that feels like the future, where respect for the land is a visceral vocation evident in every vine, every pruning, and the agricultural protocol that we had the pleasure of discovering alongside the team directly in their vineyards.

Learning with Courage and Humility

In the cellar, the watchwords are minimalism and essentiality. What might appear at first glance to be a sort of "controlled anarchy" is, in fact, part of a very specific path—a learning process in which Giacomo and Bianca are increasingly discovering their terroir, their vines, and their grapes.

For this reason, wood is not used (at least for the time being) as a winemaking vessel. With great humility, it is viewed as a future step—intriguing, certainly, but not currently deemed necessary. Instead, efforts are focused on clean cellar work using inert materials like concrete and steel. These are the perfect allies for understanding the full potential of a unique territory—one that is very warm, yet where grapes often struggle to reach full ripeness.

No selected yeasts, zero invasive thermal control, and sulfur doses reduced to the bare minimum: Matrignano’s wines, such as the famous "-San" or the "Inquieto" "Ostinato," are faithful mirrors of the vintage, free from oenological tricks and superstructures. This artisanal approach has turned the winery into a small icon for seekers of "raw" wines and those who love a sincere, almost wild drink in their glass—one capable of telling the story of Tuscany with a voice that stands out from the crowd.
