Il Signor Kurtz Specialities: Red wine

Il Signor Kurtz isn't just a label; it's the genuine "voice of wine" for Marco Durante, an Umbrian winemaker who has dedicated his mind and body to natural viticulture. After more than twenty years exploring the world of wine, including time as a taster and popularizer, Durante found his true path in uncompromising production.

The name, inspired by the enigmatic character in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, evokes a philosophy that celebrates nature in its purest essence: energy and enchantment, rejecting any form of domestication. The heart of the project is located in Vallupina, near Lake Trasimeno, but Marco isn't afraid of contamination. He also works in other "challenging spots within Central Italy's small geography" and collaborates with fellow winemakers to constantly push his own boundaries.

"Fierce" Elegance

Il Signor Kurtz's production approach is wholly natural and future-forward while still respecting tradition. Winemaking is based on spontaneous fermentations, the exclusive use of neutral vessels for aging, and the absolute refusal of any filtration, fining, or addition of sulphur dioxide. In the vineyard, where he cultivates varieties like Merlot, Sangiovese, Trebbiano Spoletino, and Grechetto, Marco works solo, often on rented plots, maintaining a management style that favours biodiversity and natural balance, such as cover cropping between the rows. The result is wine that is fresh, juicy, and spontaneous, certainly elegant, but loaded with incredible "primitive" energy, offering a new interpretation of the territory and its historical grapes.

The objective is clear: to make wine a straightforward and adogmatic expression of his vision, as shown by representative labels such as Nista, Settantasette, and Milton.
