While most of the Andlau soils are characterized by pink sandstone (Grès), the Brandhof plot sits upon a vein of Jurassic limestone. This geological distinctness radically transforms the face of the Riesling: the roots, struggling to penetrate the limestone rock, extract a different kind of savoriness and structure—less "sharp" and more "broad" compared to the acidic sandstone soils.

Compared to the Sur Grès, the aromas here are riper and deeper. Alongside the citrus (leaning more toward candied lemon than lime), notes of white flowers emerge, along with a sensation of chalk dust and a very subtle hint of acacia honey, while remaining an absolutely dry wine.

On the palate, the magic of the limestone takes place. The sip is not a straight "blade," but rather has a creamier, more enveloping consistency. The acidity is there, and it is vibrant, but it is integrated into a denser structure. The finish is profoundly sapid and chalky, leaving an almost tactile sensation on the tongue.

A wine of great character, it fills the palate with elegance. It is the antithesis of a "slender" Riesling: here there is flesh, there is substance, and there is the unmistakable signature of Yann Durrmann that makes the whole experience incredibly energetic and vital.

Domaine Durrmann
