"Vigna dei Cani" Sangiovese: A Singular Discovery
This Sangiovese hails from the "Vigna dei Cani" cru, located just above our main estate. Its very existence is thanks to a French importer who, after tasting a leftover batch from the 2022 vintage, insisted it be bottled without blending from other vineyards. The Bakkanali team then re-tasted it and fully grasped the remarkable potential of this particular plot.
Indeed, this Sangiovese offers a unique layer of complexity not found in our Bakkanali Rosso. The nose reveals ripe black cherry alongside a hint of chocolate, followed by vegetal notes and wild berries. There's a delightful piquancy, too, derived from the stems during its semi-carbonic fermentation.
It's an absolutely charming wine—complex yet incredibly enjoyable. The acidity and mineral essence of this terroir truly shine through, making "I Kani" a beautiful and distinctive discovery.
The label proudly features "Bacchus and Ariadne" by Titian Vecellio.

Bakkanali: A Terroir-Driven Approach on Mount Amiata
Bakkanali is the brainchild of Sebastian Nasello, former enologist at Podere Le Ripi, and Ugo Fabbri, a highly innovative figure in artisan wine. This certified organic winery, currently transitioning to biodynamic certification, cultivates a total of 5.5 hectares of vineyards.
Diverse Terroirs and Elevations
The estate's vineyards boast a remarkable geological complexity, reflected in their diverse soil compositions:
- Poggioferro (Lower Elevation Sangiovese): Around the winery, the Sangiovese vineyards are named "Poggioferro" due to their high iron content in the soil.
- Higher Elevation Vineyards: As the elevation increases, the underlying rock reveals its most interesting characteristics.
- Limestone: Imparts tension to the wines.
- Volcanic Sands: Contribute a spicy minerality.
- Higher Altitudes: Refine the overall wine profile, exemplified by the Chardonnay vineyard at 800 meters.
Mount Amiata's Unique Geology
The vineyards are located on Mount Amiata, the largest and highest (1,738 meters) of a series of Pleistocene lava domes situated between Siena and Grosseto. Despite its volcanic origin, the soils have a significant marine matrix with large quantities of ancient calcareous sediments. These, combined with the volcanic sands and Fly
